in feb 2025, apple was secretly ordered to break icloud encryption for all users worldwide. apple pulled advanced data protection from uk users entirely rather than comply. the order was only revealed after apple sued.
a proposal to mass-scan all private messages keeps being revived in the eu, despite massive opposition. if passed, end-to-end encryption becomes worthless.
us congress reauthorised section 702 in april 2024; the nsa program that allows warrantless collection of americans' communications. all proposals requiring warrants were rejected.
